Happy Friday Langley!

Sunny skies and about 24°C in Langley today, with the weekend warming up nicely just in time for Community Day at Douglas Park on Saturday, where the forecast looks set to hit 28°C.

In today's roundup: the Langley School District passes a $429-million budget while trustees warn that tougher decisions still lie ahead, 203 Street and Industrial Avenue prepare for another multi-day closure as SkyTrain crews lift more concrete beams into place, and a local Langley firm lands a coveted contract to help shape Canada's lunar exploration future.

Plus, B.C. is pushing Ottawa for stronger AI accountability rules in the federal social media bill, and Canada earned its first-ever men's World Cup point with a late equalizer in Toronto.

Langley School District Approves $429 Million Budget Amid Growing Cost Pressures

Langley school district budget

The Langley School District has approved a $429 million budget, with trustees signalling that "harder decisions" lie ahead as cost pressures continue to mount.

Like districts across B.C., Langley is being squeezed by rising operational costs while provincial funding fails to keep pace. The result is familiar: the people who rely most on well-funded public education, working families and their kids, bear the consequences.

The budget approval comes at a time when school districts across the province are grappling with how to maintain services without adequate resources from Victoria.

How the district navigates these pressures will be worth watching closely, particularly when it comes to staffing levels, support services, and program offerings that directly affect students and families.

203 and Industrial to close again for SkyTrain work

The intersection of 203 Street and Industrial Avenue will close again next week so crews can keep building the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain guideway.

The closure runs from 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16 until 10 p.m. on Friday, June 19.

Workers will use large cranes to lift pre-cast concrete beams into place along this stretch of the future line, which is being built by the contractor for the final Langley City Station.

Industrial Avenue will temporarily reopen to two-way traffic during the closure, and people will still be able to reach nearby homes and businesses.

Langley Firm Among Companies Tapped to Chart Canada's Lunar Exploration Future

Langley BC firm lunar exploration contract

A Langley, B.C. firm has been named among three companies selected to help chart Canada's role in lunar exploration, and its founder Shaun Riddell is, as he put it, "over the moon."

The contract positions the local company at the forefront of Canada's space ambitions, a notable win for the Fraser Valley's growing tech sector.

Details on the scope of work and contract value are still emerging, but the selection highlights that serious innovation is happening well beyond Vancouver's core.

B.C. Says Federal Social Media Bill Falls Short on AI Reporting Requirements

B.C.'s leaders are pushing for stronger minimum requirements that would compel AI companies to report certain activity to police, saying the federal social media bill does not go far enough.

While one expert has called the federal legislation "ambitious," the provincial government wants more teeth, particularly around how AI-generated content is flagged and monitored.

The tension between ambitious tech regulation and effective enforcement is real. Any framework that relies heavily on corporate self-reporting deserves healthy skepticism, given the industry's track record of prioritizing growth over safety.

How much power tech giants retain to police themselves, versus how much accountability is built into law, will determine whether the bill actually protects people.

Late goal earns Canada historic World Cup point

Cyle Larin came off the bench to rescue Canada with a late goal in Friday's World Cup opener in Toronto.

The 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina gives Canada its first-ever point at a senior men's FIFA World Cup, after going winless at Mexico 1986 and Qatar 2022.

Bosnia struck first on a 21st-minute header from a corner kick, and Canada pressed hard all afternoon before Larin's 79th-minute strike sent Toronto Stadium into a frenzy.

Canada's next two matches both come to BC Place in Vancouver, with Qatar up first on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
