Langley Roundup: News for October 13th, 2026

Grab the umbrella, friends. Today brings light rain under grey skies, with a high around 16°C. Wednesday is even wetter, but the clouds start breaking up Thursday. Friday looks clear and sunny with a high near 20°C, which is not bad at all for mid-October.

Closer to home, SkyTrain construction is giving Langley drivers a bit of a break this week. The Aldergrove border crossing is also shifting its hours to match the U.S. time change, and Fort Langley is getting a visit from the King himself. Sort of.

Across the province, the election campaign is heating up over health care, transit, and housing. Plus, scientists sound the alarm on AI models going rogue, and the Langley-based Vancouver Bandits bring hoops to Haida Gwaii.

🛂 Aldergrove Border Crossing Shifts Hours to Match U.S. Time Change

The Lynden-Aldergrove crossing will open and close an hour later starting Nov. 1. Its new hours of 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. will last until March 14, 2027, because B.C. dropped clock changes but Washington State still falls back. The 24-hour crossings at Sumas-Huntingdon and Peace Arch are not affected. (via Langley Advance Times)

🚇 Fewer SkyTrain Traffic Headaches in Langley This Week

No new SkyTrain-related traffic changes are planned in Langley this week. The lane east from the Langley Bypass to Production Way stays closed, and Industrial Avenue remains one-way eastbound between 200 and 203 Street. With the guideway more than 65 per cent done and the Langley Launcher heading toward the Willowbrook and Langley City stations, the Dave Barrett Extension is on track to bring fast, frequent rail to Langley in late 2029. 🗳️ B.C. Party Leaders Pitch Business Lobby Before Wednesday’s Debate

🏥 Eby Vows No U.S.-Style Health Care Privatization in B.C

NDP Leader David Eby is promising not to bring the kind of U.S.-style health care privatization he linked to the premier next door to B.C. The Conservatives called his warning fearmongering. Public health care is one of the clearest dividing lines in this campaign, and for-profit care tends to work best for people who can afford to pay. (via CTV News)

🚌 Why Is Transit Missing From the B.C. Election Campaign?

A new opinion piece asks why public transit has barely come up in the provincial campaign. Transit is popular and wins votes, yet the leading parties haven’t made strong promises. With SkyTrain finally rising through Langley, Fraser Valley riders deserve to know who will fund the buses and trains that connect to it. (via The Tyee)

🏘️ Grading Vancouver Council’s Housing Record

The Tyee looks back at the housing record of Vancouver’s ABC-led council and at what the parties are promising now. For renters squeezed by sky-high costs, the real test is simple: did the pledges turn into homes people can actually afford? (via The Tyee)

🤖 Canadian Scientists Warn of More AI Hacking Unless Tech Giants Are Reined In

Dozens of Canadian scientists, including AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, are calling for tighter controls on AI models. Their open letter follows disclosures that models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google hacked other organizations, sometimes without any human telling them to. The scientists warn that unless containment rules catch up with these companies’ race to release more powerful tools, the public’s critical infrastructure will pay the price. (via FraserValleyToday)

🍁 Carney Urges Albertans to Choose Unity Ahead of Referendum

Prime Minister Mark Carney used Thanksgiving to urge Albertans to choose unity in Monday’s referendum. B.C. NDP Leader David Eby sent a similar “stronger together” message, and former rival premiers Rachel Notley and Jason Kenney are teaming up today to campaign against leaving Canada. The most contested question asks whether Alberta should stay or hold a second, binding vote on separation. (via CTV News)
