Langley Roundup: News for June 18th, 2026

By Rainer Fehrenbacher
5 min read

Good morning, Langley! The skies are clear and the sun is doing its job, with temperatures sitting around 21°C this morning and climbing toward a high near 26°C, just about perfect weather for an outdoor watch party.

And there's plenty to watch. Canada faces Qatar at the World Cup today, and both the City and Township are hosting free viewing parties so you can catch the action without the price of a ticket.

Elsewhere, City council is exploring a charming idea to turn a retired SkyTrain car into downtown public art, a fitting tribute to the transit history shaping our community. The Sounds of Summer concert series has launched at Douglas Park with free midweek music, and the Vancouver Goldeneyes landed the top pick in the PWHL draft.

We've also got a $50K boost for North Fraser's volunteer firefighters, a date for the Vancouver Giants home opener at the LEC, and a front-row seat to Surrey's police board falling apart.

Canada plays Qatar today, and Langley fans can watch for free.

Both Langley City and the Township are hosting watch parties for the Thursday, June 18 match, part of a wider free World Cup program across the two municipalities.

Today, June 18:

  • Langley City holds its very first watch party at the civic plaza north of city hall (20399 Douglas Cres.), with a food truck, craft activities and entertainment
  • The Township shows the same match on the big screen at the Stadium at the Langley Events Centre (7888 200 St.)
  • Bring your own chair, though some seating will be provided

The rest of the schedule:

  • 17 parties in total: four in the City, 13 in the Township
  • Township events feature family-friendly entertainment, kids' soccer activities, food, and a licensed area for alcohol
  • If Canada advances, Round of 32 (July 2) and Round of 16 (July 7) games get added
  • Both plans include the gold-medal final on Sunday, July 19

The Aldergrove Legion (Branch 265) is also hosting afternoon watch parties at its Fraser Highway lounge.

Full schedules are posted at tol.ca and langleycity.ca.

Langley City Council Backs Plan to Turn Retired SkyTrain Car Into Public Art

Langley City Council voted Monday to support, in principle, a grassroots proposal to acquire one of TransLink's retiring Mark I SkyTrain cars and transform it into a public art installation in the downtown core.

The proposal, developed by members of the city's Arts, Recreation, Culture and Heritage Committee, envisions converting the car's interior into a functional community space: think pop-up shop, art gallery, or cafe.

The concept is a fitting nod to local transit history. Langley Prairie, as the city was once known, was a major stop on the old Interurban line, and with SkyTrain extension on the horizon, the installation would celebrate the role transit infrastructure has played in shaping the community.

Possible locations include Innes Corners Plaza and the future Langley City Centre SkyTrain station, though nothing is finalized. A local railcar restoration community has already expressed interest in volunteering for the project.

Langley City's public art fund could help cover costs. TransLink has been accepting proposals for the retiring fleet since late 2024, with unclaimed cars destined for the scrapyard.

Langley City's Sounds of Summer Series Kicks Off at Douglas Park

Langley City's new Sounds of Summer concert series launched its inaugural Wednesday evening at Douglas Park, bringing live music and local vendors to the heart of the community.

The opener drew a modest crowd, but the weekly format is designed to build momentum throughout the season. Events run each Wednesday with free music and a rotating lineup of vendors.

It is exactly the kind of accessible, no-cost public programming that makes shared spaces feel like they belong to everyone, not just those who can afford a cover charge.

Residents looking for a low-key midweek outing can head to Douglas Park for the next instalment.

Surrey's police board meltdown makes Langley look calm

Surrey's police board meeting fell apart on Wednesday.

Directors walked out as residents demanded to know why the city's former police chief was fired without cause.

Two board members had already quit days earlier, and the public session turned ugly with shouts of "shame" and "boo." One speaker told the entire board to resign.

The police union warned the transition has been "politicized from the beginning," and questioned why a financial review of the force was announced just months before the October election.

If the dysfunction sounds familiar, take heart, Langley. We are not the only community wrestling with drama over who polices our streets.

Our own RCMP cost fights suddenly look almost tidy.

Volunteer firefighters serving rural Fraser Valley communities are getting a major equipment boost.

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada awarded the FVRD North Fraser Volunteer Fire Department a grant of more than $50,000.

The money buys a spreader, cutter and accessories that let crews perform faster, safer rescues in serious crashes and other life-threatening calls.

It fills a real gap, since the department covers a large area with three fire halls but only one set of cutting tools.

A second set can now be stationed at another hall, speeding up response when someone is trapped in wreckage.

The award is one of 20 across Canada this cycle, together worth more than $594,000 in lifesaving gear.

Goldeneyes land top pick Caroline Harvey in PWHL draft

The Vancouver Goldeneyes grabbed the first overall pick in Wednesday's PWHL draft.

They used it on Wisconsin defender Caroline Harvey, widely seen as the most accomplished player of her generation.

The 23-year-old was named the world's top female player that same day, fresh off Olympic gold and an MVP run at the Milan Cortina Games.

Harvey closed her college career with back-to-back 60-point seasons, and she brings instant offence to a club that finished sixth in its first season.

She joins a strong Vancouver blue line that already features defender of the year finalist Sophie Jaques, along with forward Sarah Nurse.

The pick is a bold statement from a team still in transition, with GM Cara Gardner Morey yet to name a new head coach.
