Tuesday in Langley is shaping up cloudy and mild, with a high near 26°C and a 35 percent chance of rain.

Today's roundup looks at BC Hydro's substation expansion meant to keep up with Fraser Valley growth, a tight water summer ahead as Metro Vancouver's snowpack sits at just 44 percent of normal, and four people connected to a cruise ship hantavirus outbreak arriving in B.C. for isolation.

On the sports front, the Vancouver Rise FC are still searching for their first win, while the Vancouver Bandits have landed an NBA G League All-Star ahead of opening night.

Plus, Veronica's Gourmet Pierogies is hosting a Ukrainian dinner fundraiser at the Aldergrove Legion to support PTSD awareness and Honour House.

BC Hydro's Mount Lehman substation project in Abbotsford will also serve the Aldergrove and Gloucester areas, part of an effort to keep electrical infrastructure in step with the Fraser Valley's rapidly growing population.

The expansion is framed as necessary to power new homes in the region, though it raises the familiar question of who benefits most from growth: existing residents who need reliable service, or the development industry driving demand.

For Aldergrove and Gloucester residents, the project represents a basic infrastructure commitment that should have been keeping pace with approvals for new housing all along.

Details on timelines and construction impacts for the surrounding communities are expected from BC Hydro in the coming months.

Metro Vancouver's Low Snowpack Means a Tight Water Summer for Langley

Metro Vancouver is already in Stage 2 water restrictions, and residents should prepare for Stage 3 as early as June. The snowpack feeding the region's reservoirs sits at just 44% of its historic average, a stark indicator of the accelerating climate crisis hitting B.C.'s water infrastructure.

On top of the low snowpack, the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel project will take a major supply connection offline this summer, and Environment Canada is forecasting another hot, dry season.

Under current restrictions, lawn watering, filling decorative water features, and pressure washing impermeable surfaces are all prohibited. Public sports fields remain exempt for now.

The good news: alpine lake reservoirs including Palisade, Burwell, and Loch Lomond are expected to be full by the end of spring.

This is not simply a weather story. Decades of underinvestment in water resilience, combined with climate warming driven by fossil fuel extraction, are compounding the pressure on a public resource that every household depends on.

Four people connected to the hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship have arrived in British Columbia to begin a 21-day isolation period, as international cases continue to emerge.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry assured the public that the individuals will have no contact with the general public at any point during their arrival or isolation.

Globally, a French woman and an American passenger have now tested positive for the virus, with a third person showing symptoms, as countries scramble to repatriate and monitor evacuees.

The situation underscores the ongoing public health risks tied to the massive cruise ship industry, which packs thousands of passengers into floating enclosed environments with limited accountability when outbreaks occur.

Rise FC Drops Third Straight in 4-0 Loss to Ottawa

The Vancouver Rise FC remain winless to start the season after a 4-0 loss to the Ottawa Rapid FC on May 6.

Ottawa's Kayla Adamek opened the scoring in the 29th minute, with D.B. Pridham adding two goals and Sadie Waite finishing things off.

The Rise controlled 56 percent of possession at TD Place Stadium but managed only two shots on goal.

The match did bring some bright spots, including a first start for Tori Tumeth, a Rise FC debut for Jaime Perrault, and a return to play for Kennedy Faulknor after a season-ending injury last fall.

Vancouver travels to face the Halifax Tides FC on Monday, May 18 at 2 p.m. PT.

Vancouver FC Wins Inaugural Langley Derby 2-0

Vancouver FC won the first-ever Langley Derby 2-0 on Mother's Day at the Stadium at Langley Events Centre.

The Canadian Premier League side needed late goals to break down Langley United, the British Columbia Premier League champions celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.

Tom Field's deflected shot in the 74th minute and Nicolas Mezquida's close-range finish in the 87th sealed the result in front of about 3,000 fans, who packed the stadium both clubs share as home.

Langley United Executive Director Marcel Horn told the Langley Advance Times that conditioning was the difference, as the semi-pro side "ran out of legs" in the final 20 minutes against the full-time professionals.

Vancouver FC now advances to a quarter-final match against MLS side CF Montréal in July.

Bandits Sign NBA G League All-Star Jaelen House

The Vancouver Bandits have landed an NBA G League All-Star ahead of their season opener.

Jaelen House, a 6-foot-1 guard from Phoenix, signed with the Langley-based club for the 2026 CEBL season.

He is the nephew of former Vancouver Grizzlies star Mike Bibby and the son of NBA champion Eddie House.

Last season with the San Diego Clippers, House led the G League in assist percentage at 40.5 percent while averaging 21 points and 7.3 assists per game.

The Bandits open the season on the road in Saskatoon on May 14 and host Edmonton at Langley Events Centre on May 22.
