VIDEO: Langley Survivor of 1958 Bridge Collapse Marks Solemn Anniversary

Lucien Lessard, a 96-year-old Langley resident, recently commemorated the anniversary of the Second Narrows Bridge disaster that claimed 19 lives on June 17, 1958. As the last living survivor, Lessard recounted his harrowing experience of plummeting from the bridge deck into Burrard Inlet when the partially constructed span collapsed.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Lessard managed to swim to safety that fateful day. His remarkable story of survival has become an important piece of local history.
The annual memorial ceremony brings together families of victims, former ironworkers, and community members to honor those lost in what remains one of Canada's worst industrial accidents.

Langley RCMP is seeking public assistance in locating a local man who has been missing since Saturday, June 15. Authorities have expressed growing concern as the individual has not made contact with family or friends, which is described as highly unusual behavior.
The missing person was last seen in the Willowbrook area wearing casual clothing. Police have released a recent photograph and are asking community members to check outbuildings, yards, and security camera footage.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Langley RCMP detachment immediately.

Conservative Infighting Escalates as RCMP Reviews Blackmail Claims Between Rustad and Independent MLAs

A bitter power struggle between BC Conservative Leader John Rustad and three Independent MLAs has reached the RCMP after explosive allegations of blackmail and secretly recorded conversations emerged from internal party warfare.
Rustad alleged in an internal memo that Independent MLAs Dallas Brodie, Tara Armstrong, and Jordan Kealy or their staff threatened to release recorded conversations to coerce party members, while the Independent MLAs claim Rustad rigged the party's annual general meeting after they attempted to remove his leadership.
The escalating conflict stems from the MLAs' departure from the Conservative Party following controversy over Brodie questioning evidence of children's graves at residential schools, leading to failed attempts to wrest control from Rustad at the March annual meeting and subsequent formation of the breakaway One BC party.
The NDP government stepped into the fray when Rustad failed to provide evidence or approach police himself, with Caucus Chair Stephanie Higginson filing the RCMP complaint while noting the political opportunity to appear as responsible stewards amid conservative dysfunction that keeps damaging opposition stories in the headlines.
Fraser Valley LGBTQ+ Community Builds Power Through Summer of Solidarity
Four Pride festivals across the Fraser Valley this summer showcase how grassroots organizing transforms communities once hostile to LGBTQ+ residents.
Chilliwack's "Bloom with Pride" festival on July 13 features drag performances and accessible programming, while Fraser Valley Pride's 13th annual celebration at Fraser River Heritage Park brings families together in Mission.
Langley Pride Day combines family-friendly activities with an evening concert featuring Vancouver's Queer as Funk, and Hope Pride moves to August 23 after establishing the district's first pride flag raising.
These festivals, supported by drag bingo nights, queer book clubs, and youth dances, represent more than celebration—they're acts of collective power-building that challenge the region's conservative past while creating inclusive spaces where all workers can thrive.

Ten Years After Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Canada Moving Backwards

A decade after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its landmark report, Indigenous leaders are sounding the alarm that Canada is regressing on its commitments.
Recent resource extraction bills pushed through Parliament without adequate First Nations consultation have reinforced concerns about the government's commitment to reconciliation principles.
Despite public promises of a "nation-to-nation relationship," several major development projects have proceeded without securing Free, Prior and Informed Consent from affected Indigenous communities. This trend represents a troubling departure from the TRC's calls to action.
Indigenous advocates are calling for a renewed commitment to implementing the Commission's 94 recommendations, particularly those addressing economic sovereignty and land rights.
Federal Power to Sidestep Indian Act Removed from Major Projects Bill
After weeks of intense criticism from First Nations leaders across the country, the federal government has amended its controversial major projects bill, removing provisions that would have allowed Ottawa to bypass key sections of the Indian Act. The change represents a significant victory for Indigenous advocacy organizations that mobilized against the legislation.
The original language raised serious concerns about potential infringement on Indigenous rights and sovereignty. Multiple First Nations governments had threatened legal challenges if the provisions remained.
While this amendment addresses one major concern, Indigenous leaders continue to press for further changes to strengthen consultation requirements and respect for Aboriginal title and rights within the proposed framework.
