By Rainer Fehrenbacher

Good morning, Langley!

Between the Township's push for community input on parking policies and tonight's lineup of Thai cooking classes and civic presentations, there's a mix of serious planning and enjoyable activities happening around town.

Whether you're interested in hearing from Mayor Pachal about the city's direction, learning some new culinary skills, or exploring aquatic leadership programs for teens, there are plenty of ways to get involved locally today.

The bigger picture shows Langley really hitting its stride as a destination.

Our craft beer scene has exploded from just two breweries to ten thriving operations in six years, creating these fantastic community gathering spaces that showcase what smart local development can look like. Meanwhile, the airport's new 2045 strategic plan promises to balance growth with sustainability and community integration.

Of course, not everything is celebratory right now.

We're still hoping for updates on missing community member Kaila Judith Michal, and there are some concerning developments at the federal level where Indigenous leaders are being shut out of crucial infrastructure discussions.

But there's also plenty to appreciate, like Willowbrook's free summer programming bringing families together and our Thunder absolutely demolishing the Burrards 22-6 in what sounds like an incredible lacrosse showcase.

Langley Township Seeks Your Voice on Parking Solutions - Take the Survey Now!

Langley Township logo

Langley Township is asking residents to weigh in on the future of parking through a comprehensive online survey that could reshape how we think about getting around our community.

The study aims to modernize parking bylaws and develop smarter on-street management strategies that balance the real needs of residents with sustainable development.

The survey covers everything from current transportation habits to support for innovative solutions like time-limited parking, resident-only zones, and reduced parking requirements near transit hubs where people have more mobility options.

Your input is crucial for creating parking policies that serve everyone while recognizing that requiring excessive parking spaces can drive up housing costs and limit community-friendly development.

Take the survey at www.tol.ca/en/connect/parking-strategy.aspx and share it widely - every voice matters in building a more livable Langley!

Langley's Craft Beer Revolution: From Two Breweries to Booming Industry Hub

Langley has transformed into a craft beer destination over the past six years, growing from just two breweries in 2019 to ten thriving operations that showcase the community's agricultural roots and entrepreneurial spirit.

The annual Brewhalla festival in Fort Langley now celebrates this boom with over 30 vendors, reflecting how relaxed liquor laws in 2013 sparked an industry explosion that led to KPU's pioneering Brewing and Brewery Operations program in 2014.

Local breweries like Locality Brewing grow over 50% of their own ingredients on family farms, while others like Camp Beer Co. have won provincial awards for their innovative tasting rooms and community spaces.

The ten breweries have formed the collaborative Langley Loop partnership, creating jobs and economic activity while building vibrant gathering places that strengthen neighborhood connections without requiring massive parking lots or car-dependent designs.

Indigenous Leaders Shut Out of Parliamentary Hearings on Controversial Infrastructure Bill C-5

Parliamentary committee

First Nations leaders are condemning the federal government for rescinding invitations to testify on Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy Act, which would give Ottawa sweeping powers to override existing laws including the Indian Act to fast-track major infrastructure projects.

Chiefs of Ontario head Abram Benedict and Anishnabek Nation's Linda Debassigé say they were removed from the witness list as committee hearings were suddenly shortened from 12 hours to just three, with only Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak permitted to speak while a dozen other chiefs sat silently behind her.

Benedict believes the government is deliberately suppressing opposition to legislation that Indigenous leaders warn could face court challenges and protests if their constitutional rights aren't respected.

This troubling pattern of excluding affected communities from decision-making processes mirrors how car-centric infrastructure projects have historically been imposed on neighborhoods without meaningful consultation about their true costs and impacts.
