Science World Undergoes $15 Million Climate Retrofit to Cut Emissions 80 Percent

Vancouver's iconic Science World is nearing completion of a major green retrofit that will slash the geodesic dome's greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent through new insulation, heat pumps, and solar panels.

The multimillion-dollar overhaul by SES Consulting demonstrates how existing buildings can be transformed rather than demolished, avoiding the carbon costs of new construction while creating jobs in the growing Pacific Northwest retrofit industry.

The project highlights the urgency of addressing the built environment, which accounts for 26 percent of Metro Vancouver's emissions, and shows how public institutions can lead by example in the transition to renewable energy.

Rather than tearing down the Expo 86 landmark that wasn't designed to last, Science World's transformation proves that retrofitting older structures can be both environmentally and economically sustainable while preserving community heritage.

Federal Government's Strike-Breaking Proclivities Face Public Backlash After Air Canada Debacle

Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu's order ending the Air Canada flight attendants' three-day strike has sparked fierce criticism from labor groups who accuse Ottawa of systematic anti-union bias through frequent use of Section 107 powers.

The 10,000 CUPE workers defied the back-to-work order and risked jail time before reaching a settlement that addresses unpaid work grievances, demonstrating that direct worker action remains more effective than government-imposed arbitration.

Union leaders across Canada are calling for Prime Minister Mark Carney to eliminate Section 107 from the Canada Labour Code, arguing that the Liberal government's willingness to intervene within hours of strikes beginning reveals a pro-employer stance that undermines collective bargaining and strips workers of their only real leverage.

The predominantly female flight attendants' victory in securing compensation for unpaid ground work could inspire similar struggles across the airline industry, proving that worker solidarity can challenge both corporate exploitation and government overreach.

New Federal Rules Let Employers Take Up to 30% of Underpaid Migrant Workers' Wages for Housing

Proposed changes to Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program would let employers deduct up to 30 percent of wages for housing, potentially costing workers over $15,000 yearly according to a new Migrant Rights Network report.

Despite horrific living conditions described by 514 surveyed workers, including sleeping eight to a room and urinating in bottles, the government's vague housing guidelines remain unenforceable while benefiting agribusiness profits.

Advocates argue that granting permanent resident status would give workers real power to escape abusive employers, but Ottawa appears to be capitulating to corporate lobby groups who profit from exploiting Canada's most vulnerable workers.
