In a dramatic federal election that saw the Liberal Party secure another term in government, Langley bucked the national trend by electing Conservative members of Parliament in all three of its ridings.
The results highlight the region's continued support for conservative policies, even as the rest of the country leans slightly left.
The 2025 federal election, which came just four years after the previous vote, was marked by high voter turnout and closely contested races across the country. In Langley, however, the Conservative Party managed to maintain its stronghold, with incumbent MPs securing re-election and a young newcomer claiming victory in a newly created riding.
Cloverdale-Langley City: A Nail-Biter
In one of the night's closest contests, Conservative candidate Tamara Jansen appears poised to reclaim her seat in Cloverdale-Langley City.
With 85% of polls reporting, Jansen held a narrow lead of just 861 votes over Liberal challenger Kyle Latchford. At the time of publication, nobody has formally called the outcome for either the Liberals or the Conservatives.
The riding has been a battleground between Conservatives and Liberals since 2015, changing hands multiple times in recent elections. Jansen, whose family runs a greenhouse business in Langley, won a by-election in December 2024 after former Liberal MP John Aldag stepped down to run provincially for the BC NDP.
As votes were still being counted late into the night, the mood at Jansen's campaign headquarters on Fraser Highway was cautiously optimistic. Volunteer Barb Stoll praised Jansen's accessibility and commitment to the community. "In my personal opinion, she's been an amazing MP for our area," Stoll said.
Meanwhile, at a combined event for Liberal candidates at Rusty's Pub in Cloverdale, the mood was more somber. James Loeffler, a staffer for former MP Aldag, expressed disappointment in the preliminary results.
"It's disheartening, it's surprising," Loeffler said, voicing concerns about the Conservative MPs' stances on human rights issues, particularly those affecting the LGBTQ community.
The close margin in Cloverdale-Langley City underscores the riding's status as a key battleground.
Langley Township-Fraser Heights: Van Popta Secures "Huge Relief"
In the reconfigured riding of Langley Township-Fraser Heights, incumbent Conservative MP Tako Van Popta claimed a decisive victory.
With nearly all polls reporting, Van Popta secured 51.5% of the vote, comfortably ahead of Liberal John Aldag's 42.3%.
Speaking to cheering supporters at his campaign office, Van Popta called the win a "huge relief" and thanked the volunteers who had worked tirelessly on his campaign. "Every day I prayed that the volunteers would have success," Van Popta said. "Indeed, that prayer has been answered."
The redistribution of electoral boundaries presented new challenges for Van Popta's team. "It was very sad with the redistribution of the riding to lose Brookswood and Aldergrove, but I'm very happy to have kept Fraser Heights," he remarked.
Van Popta acknowledged the impact of national and international events on the campaign, including leadership changes in the Liberal Party and developments in the United States.
He also noted that the Conservative Party's seat count had increased, partly due to what he described as a "collapse" in NDP support.
Abbotsford-South Langley: Young Conservative Claims New Seat
In the newly created riding of Abbotsford-South Langley, 25-year-old Conservative candidate Sukhman Gill emerged victorious.
Gill, who grew up on a Langley Township blueberry farm, secured 43.4% of the vote, ahead of Liberal Kevin Gillies at 33% and independent candidate Mike de Jong at 17.7%.
Speaking to supporters at the Langley Banquet Hall, Gill expressed his commitment to representing his constituents.
"I'm going to make sure that we open the doors and we hear the people out, what the concerns are, and we try to push the Conservative values to represent the Abbotsford-South Langley riding," he said.
Implications for Langley and Beyond
The Conservative victories (and potential sweep) in Langley stands in contrast to the national result, which saw the Liberal Party secure another term at the helm of Parliament.
This divergence highlights the unique political landscape of the region and the challenges it may face in advocating for local interests within a Liberal-led Parliament.
For Langley residents, the election results bring both opportunities and concerns. The community's strong Conservative representation may provide a powerful voice for local issues such as agriculture, small business support, and infrastructure development. However, some residents worry about the potential for ideological clashes with the Liberal government on social issues and national policies.
The high voter turnout and closely contested races in Langley reflect a politically engaged community that takes its democratic responsibilities seriously.
As the region continues to grow and evolve, balancing local conservative values with broader national trends will be a key challenge for both elected officials and constituents.
Looking ahead, the newly elected and re-elected Conservative MPs from Langley will face the task of effectively representing their constituents' interests while navigating the complexities of working as the opposition.
Their ability to build bridges and find common ground with MPs from other parties will be crucial in addressing the needs of Langley's diverse population, including its farmers, small business owners, and working families.
As the dust settles on this election, the people of Langley will be watching closely to see how their chosen representatives perform on the national stage.
With pressing issues such as affordable housing, healthcare improvements, and economic recovery on the agenda, the coming months and years will be a critical test of the Conservative MPs' ability to deliver results for their community while working within the framework of a Liberal-led government.
Update: The original version of this article wrote that Tamara Jansen won the riding of Cloverdale-Langley City. While that may end up being the final outcome, that race is still too close to call and this story has been updated accordingly. We'll update the story once again when we know decisively who won that race.
