Hi neighbours,

If the morning roundups have felt a little sparse lately, that's on me. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. Between covering two elections at once and keeping up with life at home, something had to give, and the daily roundup took the hit.

The good news is I've spent that time rebuilding how these roundups come together behind the scenes. The new format is leaner: each story gets a clear headline, a link to the original source, and a quick summary so you can scan the day's news in a couple of minutes. More importantly, it's a workflow I can actually keep up with, which means you should see these land in your inbox much more consistently.

I'd love to hear what you think. Does the shorter format work for you? Is anything missing that you used to look forward to? Hit reply, or use the quick survey at the bottom of this post. Your feedback directly shapes what this becomes.

Two other small asks. If you find the roundup useful, please share it. Forward it to a friend, post it in your neighbourhood Facebook group, or pass it along on Bluesky, Mastodon, Instagram, or wherever you spend time online. Word of mouth is how independent local news grows.

And if you're a regular reader, please consider becoming a paying member. Memberships start at $7 a month, and they're the only way I get paid for this work.

**There are no ads, no corporate owners, and no big funders behind The Langley Union. It's just me, digging through council agendas and campaign promises so you don't have to.**

Every membership helps keep this going and keeps it free for everyone in town.

Thanks for reading, and for sticking with me. Now, on to the news.

Rainer

Langley City's mayoral race heats up over a pool and arts centre, and three horses bound for Tbird die in a crash. Plus B.C. election debates on taxing the rich, farmland protection, seniors care and the Lions' playoff push. Langley City's mayor race, a sad loss at Tbird, B.C. tax-the-rich debates and a Lions playoff push in today's Langley Roundup.

Langley gets a mild, mostly cloudy day today, with a high near 19°C after a cool start around 11°C. Thursday looks much the same. Rain moves in Friday with about 9 mm and a high of only 14°C. Saturday starts chilly near 8°C, with a few light showers.

In local news, Langley City's two mayoral hopefuls split over a proposed pool and arts centre ahead of the Oct. 17 vote. The equestrian community is also mourning three horses killed on their way to Thunderbird Show Park.

Across B.C., taxing the rich is shaping up as a defining campaign issue. Farmland protection is on the agenda, and a cancelled seniors care project raises questions about relying on private operators. Plus, the Lions can lock up a playoff spot Friday.

Langley City has a two-way race for mayor on Oct. 17\. Incumbent Nathan Pachal backs continued planning for a year-round Al Anderson pool and a new arts centre at Timms, which could cost up to $178 million. He says the City will chase every grant first. Coun. Delaney Mack opposes the projects, citing 38.5 per cent in tax hikes this term, and wants money directed to policing and roads instead. (via Langley Advance Times)

The NDP wants higher income taxes on top earners, while the Greens are pitching a wealth tax on the super-rich. The NDP plan raises the top two brackets by two points and adds a new bracket above $1 million, so anyone earning under $190,405 would not pay a cent more. The CCPA expects a pushback campaign from top earners, but asking the wealthiest to chip in for public services should be an easy sell. (via CCPA)
