### Help keep daily local news in Langley.

The Langley Union publishes original local reporting every day. No ads, no sponsored content, no paywalls, because community journalism should be available to everyone who lives here, not just those who can afford an online subscription.

That model only works when readers who can pitch in, do. If you find real value in this work and want to help keep it going, becoming a paying member or leaving a tip makes the next article possible. If you're just here to read, that's welcome too. No pressure.

Friday is shaping up mild in Langley, with a high near 22°C and only a little rain in the forecast. Soak it up. This might be the calmest day we get for a while.

Saturday turns soggy, with steady rain and a high around 15°C, so pack an umbrella for election day. Sunday and Monday stay grey and cooler, with highs around 13 or 14°C. Jacket weather is officially back.

The forecast for the news cycle is stormier. Alberta votes in its referendum on Monday, and you can expect American MAGA media to crank up the volume. Our own homegrown Maple MAGA crowd will likely join in. The “voter fraud” talking points are already warming up, and the goal is the same as always: drive a wedge between Canadians and chip away at our sovereignty.

So enjoy today. Go for a walk, grab a coffee, and talk to your neighbours.

It’s also a big civic weekend here at home. Langley picks its local leaders on Saturday, and provincial advance polls are already open. Both are good reminders that our elections are run by our neighbours, and they work.

Also in today’s roundup: a former Langley Mountie gets a fine for beating a man in the cells, the BC Conservatives want to rip up the Massey crossing plan, and a court backs a Kelowna drag performer against an anti-drag group.

If you are annoyed by the volume of Langley Union articles landing in your mailbox today, please note that this is only temporary. I'm trying to get as much content published about the City and Township elections as possible and your understanding is very appreciated!

Saturday, Oct. 17, is municipal election day across B.C., including Langley City and Township. Provincial advance polls are open the same day, and some locations will host both votes. Make sure you're in the right line for the mayor, council and school trustee races. (via The Tyee)

The last Township candidates' debate before Saturday's vote focused on the environment and climate change. The TWU Environmental Club and Climate Crisis Langley Action Partners co-hosted the event Thursday night at Trinity Western University. Seven candidates were expected to take part. It's a good reminder that local councils shape climate outcomes through land use, transit and sprawl. (via Langley Advance Times)

Provincial advance voting runs from today until Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. You can vote at any voting place in B.C. Bring ID showing your name and address. If you don't have ID, an eligible family member or caregiver can vouch for you. Final voting day is Saturday, Oct. 24\. (via Langley Advance Times)

### 🎤 [Eby Makes a Quick Campaign Stop in Langley](https://langleyadvancetimes.com/2026/10/15/ndp-leader-makes-brief-langley-visit/?ref=langleyunion.ca)

NDP leader David Eby rallied volunteers Thursday at the office of Langley-Willowbrook candidate Andrew Mercier, with Langley-Walnut Grove candidate Holly Isaac on hand. He pitched regulating grocery prices on essentials and keeping car insurance low, then left without taking questions. BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson visited earlier in the campaign. Both leaders have spent far more time in Surrey, so Langley voters could be forgiven for feeling a bit overlooked. (via Langley Advance Times)

### ⚖️ [Former Langley Mountie Fined $2,500 for Beating a Man in Custody](https://langleyadvancetimes.com/2026/10/15/former-langley-mountie-fined-2500-for-second-assault/?ref=langleyunion.ca)

Former RCMP staff sergeant Damian Volk has been fined $2,500 for assaulting Jason Petrus in the Langley detachment cells. Petrus had been arrested for public intoxication in 2020\. A judge described what followed as "a thorough thrashing," which ended with a kick to Petrus's head with a boot heel. It's Volk's second conviction for assaulting someone in those cells. Crown had asked for three months in jail. Instead, his two sentences add up to a fine and 45 days of curfew at home, which raises fair questions about how police violence is punished. The BC Conservatives say they would scrap the Massey Tunnel plan and build a bridge instead. Reopening the crossing debate means more delay for Highway 99 commuters. Bigger highway builds also tend to fill up with more cars, when transit riders need faster, more frequent service. (via CTV News)

### 🌲 [Forest Industry Pushes for Bigger Payouts in Indigenous Land Transfers](https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/bcs-eby-says-proposed-indigenous-land-transfer-legislation-is-about-saving-money/?ref=langleyunion.ca)

NDP leader David Eby says his proposed law on transferring land to First Nations is about saving money. A forest industry leader wants to weaken the plan's limits on how much forest companies get paid when land changes hands. Much of B.C. is unceded First Nations territory. Pushing for bigger corporate payouts when land returns to its rightful stewards puts company balance sheets ahead of reconciliation. (via CTV News)

### 🩺 [Analysis Finds B.C. Parties Falling Short on Family Doctor Crisis](https://www.policyalternatives.ca/news-research/where-do-b-c-parties-stand-on-big-health-care-challenges/?ref=langleyunion.ca)

The share of British Columbians with a regular family doctor fell from 82 per cent in 2015 to 75 per cent in 2024\. A new analysis finds the Conservatives' $50 million rural clinic fund and the NDP's push for more urgent care centres both miss the bigger need: long-term relationships between patients and their care providers, and keeping health workers on the job. The Greens and CentreBC have released the most detailed plans so far. (via CCPA)

### 🏳️‍🌈 [Court Lets Kelowna Drag Performer Sue Anti-Drag Group](https://langleyadvancetimes.com/2026/10/15/kelowna-drag-star-gets-approval-to-push-forward-with-defamation-suit/?ref=langleyunion.ca)

A B.C. Supreme Court judge says Tyson Cook, who performs as Freida Whales, can take his defamation suit against Action4Canada to trial. The group targeted Cook after a library drag story time, with statements linking drag to child abuse. The judge found the statements went beyond opinion and implied a specific person was involved in crimes against children. Hate campaigns against drag performers cause real harm to real people, and now one of them will have to answer for it in court. (via Langley Advance Times)

Albertans vote Monday on 10 questions, including whether to start the process toward a separation vote. Several questions target temporary residents, with options like waiting periods for social programs and fees for health care and schools. The government won't define "Alberta-approved immigration status" until after the vote. Critics, including the Canadian Bar Association's provincial chapter, warn some ideas could clash with the Canada Health Act or Charter equality rights. Blaming migrants for strained public services lets years of underfunding off the hook. (via Fraser Valley Today)
